American Yellow Perch
Walleye are the crown jewel of Lake Ontario fishing, especially in fall. These golden-eyed predators average 3-5 pounds, but trophy fish over 10 pounds aren't uncommon. You'll find them along rocky points and deep ledges, often in 20-40 feet of water. Walleye fishing really heats up in late fall as they feed heavily before winter. Anglers prize walleye for their challenging nature and unbeatable taste. Nothing beats fresh walleye fillets! To land a big one, try jigging blade baits or trolling crankbaits along steep breaks. My top tip is to fish during low light periods - dawn and dusk are prime time. And don't be afraid to upsize your bait in fall, big walleye want a hearty meal.
Northern Pike
Northern pike are the apex predators of Lake Ontario. These toothy critters can grow over 40 inches long and put up a mean fight. Look for pike in weedy bays and around underwater points, especially in 5-15 feet of water. Spring and fall are prime pike seasons when they move shallow to feed. Anglers love targeting pike for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. Just watch those teeth when unhooking - they're no joke! Pike aren't known for being great table fare, but they're a blast to catch and release. To hook into a big one, try trolling large spoons or crankbaits along weed edges. My secret weapon is a flashy inline spinner retrieved erratically. The key is to cover lots of water until you find the active fish.
Smallmouth Bass
Smallmouth bass are one of Lake Ontario's most exciting gamefish. These bronze beauties typically run 2-4 pounds but can reach over 8 pounds in our waters. You'll find them around rocky points, drop-offs, and submerged structure in 10-30 feet. They're most active in late spring through fall when water temps are in the 60s. Smallies are famous for their acrobatic fights - expect lots of jumps and runs that'll test your skills. They're not just fun to catch, they're great eating too. To land a big one, try dragging a tube jig or drop shot rig along gravel flats. My go-to trick is using a watermelon-colored creature bait rigged weedless. Twitch it slowly over rock piles and hold on tight!
Walleye
American Yellow Perch are feisty little fish that pack a punch for their size. Most run 7-8 inches, but they can get up to 15 inches in Lake Ontario. You'll find them hanging out near weed beds, docks, and fallen trees in shallow to medium depths. Spring and fall are prime perch seasons when they school up tight. Anglers love targeting perch because they're aggressive biters and absolutely delicious on the table. Nothing beats a fresh perch fry! To catch 'em, I like using small jigs tipped with worms or minnows. Work the bait slowly along the bottom, especially near drop-offs. When you find one perch, there's usually a whole school nearby, so it's common to catch a bunch once you get on 'em. Just remember to bring a bucket - you'll want to keep some for dinner!
